Cosmetology Job Outlook: Looking Good!!!

Fifty-three percent of beauty salon owners had job openings in recent years, according to a report released by The National Accrediting Commission Of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences (NACCAS). Three-quarters of those surveyed said they had trouble finding applicants. “Salon owners have jobs waiting,” says the report, but they have been unable to find enough qualified professionals to fill the jobs available. 182,000 of those jobs were filled by newly-trained professionals entering the beauty industry, many from accredited cosmetology schools like Western Beauty Institute.

WBI Gives Brides A Makeover

Prospective brides were given free makeovers at the recent “Wild and Wonderful Weddings” Bridal Show at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds on Sunday, January 13th. Talented students from Western Beauty Institute’s nearby Lancaster campus performed the beauty makeovers, featuring the latest makeup and hairstyle techniques.

“Weddings have become incredibly complicated and potentially stressful,” said the show’s coordinator Tina Hanlon. “Having all the community’s wedding resources under one roof helps planners and participants alike to keep a couple’s special day special.”

The Cost Cutters

According to a recent LA Times article, celebrities and socialites are happily paying $800-950 and up for a hairstyle or haircut these days, an encouragement to beauty school students that there is indeed great money potential to be made in their chosen field.

Even Presidential candidate John Edwards was seen shelling out $400 to keep his hair looking good. “Could I just mess your hair up a little bit?,” David Letterman asked the Senator on a recent stint on “The Late Show.”

$1,000 To The Best Beauty Writer

My “It” Things, an online magazine based in New York is having a contest this month, giving away $1,000 to the writer of the best beauty article.

Among the judges are Lina Hanson, celebrity makeup artist and beauty blogger, Diane Da Costa, celebrity stylist and author, and Lisa Hoffman, founder of Lisa Hoffman Skincare.

Power Takes A Powder

For Western Beauty Institute, it’s important to point out those times when beauty professionals who excel at their craft are featured by the national press, as inspiration to our students like those shown above in a recent competition at our Panorama City / San Fernando campus.

On Sunday, January 20th, in an article entitled “Beauty and the Ballot,” the Los Angeles Times focused on the story of professional makeup artist Kriss Soterion, calling her “the go-to makeup artist for candidates” for both Democrats and Republicans.

Skin Care Center Celebrates Winter Carnival!


Students from WBI’s Esthetician / Skin Care Center recently competed in a festive Winter Carnival-themed event.


The students were encouraged to apply their new-found knowledge and skills learned at Western Beauty Institute’s specialized Skin Care Center, located in a separate building near the main Lancaster campus building.

WBI Celebrities Get Red Carpet Treatment!

Was that Jennifer Hudson? There goes Selena! Hey, it’s Beyonce!... or at least WBI’s interpretation of those unique and celebrated styles, re-created by the skillful hands of Western Beauty Institute students.

The Celebrity Look-a-Like Contest was held at WBI’s Panorama City campus on December 20th. Students were encouraged to do their very best stylistic imitations of popular stars, using their newly acquired knowledge in the latest techniques in hair styling, nails (manicures & pedicures), cosmetic applications and other beauty techniques.
