Students Celebrate Hawaiian Days

$1,000 Economic Incentive for Estheticians - DISCONTINUED

In response to recent economic news, Western Beauty Institute is offering aspiring Estheticians some economic incentives to follow their path to stable career advancement in these uncertain times.

WBI To Enlighten Students With eLearning

eLearningAfter six months of intensive development and testing, Western Beauty will soon release its new eLearning module to its Cosmetology and Estheology students. The module will become part of the myWBI™ website, the world’s very first beauty school student web portal.

WBI’s new eLearning module will encourage students to supplement their classroom instruction by giving them access to practice exams, thousands of questions and answers, and targeted lessons. It will also provide instructors with instant feedback on their students’ performance through use of email notifications and online messaging.

In fact, this year Western Beauty Institute won First Place AND Second Place school attendance award. WBI’s San Fernando Valley Campus in Panorama City was the First Place winner and WBI’s Antelope Valley Campus in Lancaster was Second Place winner. The event was part of the SuperSunday event held at the Pechanga Casino in Temecula, California on June 1st.

WBI Wins Big at Super Sunday!

WBI WinsWestern Beauty Institute has another winner! The Lancaster team of Rebecca Garcia, stylist, and Katie Scavo, model, won second place at the fabulous Super Sunday extravaganza. The event was held again this year at Pechanga Casino and Resort near Temecula, California. The Regis Corporation, owner of SuperCuts Hair Salons, arranges for students attending cosmetology schools from around Southern California to participate in a massively-produced competition with blasting contemporary music, staging, lights, prizes and hundreds of their fellow students urging them on, very loudly. It has been compared by some (who are knowledgeable of the event) to a rock concert starring student stylists. Each student competitor on stage was selected through “in-school” competitions at their respective schools. Teachers from the schools registered the students into the competition and shared with them the rules and the preparation needed. Supercuts supplied managers to mentor the student competitors and prepare them to show their best work.

The Esthetics branch of Western Beauty Institute is becoming the polished, shiny jewel in the WBI crown. Formerly a medical facility and just steps away from the large, main branch of Western Beauty Institute’s Antelope Valley Campus, the Esthetician’s Skin Care center retains that finished, medical office feel with the warmth of an upscale spa. The reception area is comfortable and furnished with comfortable seating, fresh beauty magazines for browsing, and refreshments. Aromas for calm moods waft through the air and pleasant sounds fill all the rooms.

Poppy Festival “A Huge Success” For WBI

On Saturday April 18th, WBI staff and students were present again supporting the local Poppy Festival celebration in Lancaster City Park in the Antelope Valley. This is the second year the school has participated and again it was a rewarding experience for all.

From the opening of the festival with the wailing bagpipe procession, the WBI team was inundated with parents and children. At times, the crowd was 5 to 6 rows deep. We even had Captain Jack Sparrow drop by for a few trinkets.

Children had their faces adorned with custom flowers and creatures, children and adults had their hair braided and spray-painted bright neon glow colors. The crowds were so great, every brochure, folder, pen, key fob or other gift was given away by the end of the show.

Locks of Love

Hairstyles are a big part of the social image and identity that children explore and develop. Because of disease or medical treatment, some children and teens must suffer the loss of a crucial part of their identity. Imagine being a teenager and going to school without your hair.

Locks of Love is a national organization which seeks to return that all-important sense of self identity by providing kids with custom hairpieces made from ponytails of women and men who generously donate a part of themselves to the cause. Students from Western Beauty Institute recently got together with the Locks of Love organization in the Antelope Valley for a special event to cut hair for donation. Twenty-two students from WBI were assisted and supervised by Instructors Ms. Daisy Enamorado and Ms. Bertha Rubio, and Placement Counselor Ms. Valeria Montenegro, hosted at the Lancaster Baptist Church on Saturday, April 5th.

Cosmetology is on the move! Western Beauty Institute students have known that for a while, but now there’s a Beauty School in your phone! Western Beauty Institute now has it’s own mobile website, accessible from cell phones and other mobile devices at m.wbi.edu. The mobile site was designed to be easy to use and compatible with many different devices, and programmed to give quick, basic information about the school and its campuses in Panorama City and Lancaster.

WBI Team Wins Spectrum Beauty Expo!

A talented team of students from Western Beauty Institute’s San Fernando / Panorama City campus took First Place in the recent Spectrum International Beauty Expo 2008 Celebrity Look-alike Competition, held Monday, February 25th at the LAX Marriott Hotel.

Ms. Lana Cantrell, WBI Senior Instructor, coached the “Day Team,” who made model Nick Rose look exactly like popular superstar Enrique Iglesias. The team included Jaira Rodriguez, Hair; Ruby Ramirez, Makeup; and Allison McCune, Nails.

Coaching the “Night Team” was WBI Senior Instructor Mr. Salvador Mendoza, who made up model Aankha Neal to look like American Idol singer sensation Jennifer Hudson. Comprising the team were Azaziah Hubert, Hair; Devorah Medina, Makeup; and Kalista Lee, Nails.

“Show Your Love” Makeup Event

Recently, students in the San Fernando Valley Campus of Western Beauty Institute were challenged to come up with their best “Evening” and “Fantasy” makeup production for Valentines Day. Students chose to do either evening makeup or fantasy makeup or both. The event took place on Valentines Day in the Senior Room of the Panorama City campus.

Specifically designed to help veterans having difficulties live as self-sufficiently and independently as possible was the goal of the Antelope Valley Veterans “Stand Down” event held at Grace Chapel in Lancaster on February 2nd. Western Beauty Institute students and staff lent their skills to help Palmdale High School students look their best for a fashion show event on Thursday, January 31st. This was the second time WBI was involved with the event, which featured male and female high school students cruising the runway on an outdoor stage.

“Be Beautyful”

Recently, Randy Fugate, Director of Marketing for Western Beauty Institute called for a shoot to illustrate the brand new marketing campaign he had envisioned called “Be Beautyful.” Mr. Fugate chose one of our incredibly beautiful and talented students, Michaela Foley from our Panorama City Campus to model for the series of billboards and bus “King” posters to be produced in support of this campaign. The first in the series will be 50 bus “King” posters which will travel throughout the Los Angeles County region. The campaign will begin Monday February 4th and Mr. Fugate stated, “I expect this to be one of our most successful campaigns to date. We all want to get the word out about the fabulous school and training available to such a diverse population of students as we have here in Southern California.”

La Opinión Shares WBI Nail Secrets

A recent feature article in La Opinión newspaper highlighted the manicuring tips of Western Beauty Institute Instructor Supervisor Flor Leaños. The article by La Opinión writer Patricia Prieto outlined the care, techniques and treatments Ms. Leaños teaches to make strong and beautiful nails.

A traditional manicure, the article states, begins with a light massage to the hands, and then proceeds to clean, shape and paint the nails. French nails can be accented with colors of pink, beige, lilac or white. But nails can also be embellished with artificial acrylic or plastic nail extensions and decorative paintings, stickers or precious stones.

Cosmetology Job Outlook: Looking Good!!!

Fifty-three percent of beauty salon owners had job openings in recent years, according to a report released by The National Accrediting Commission Of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences (NACCAS). Three-quarters of those surveyed said they had trouble finding applicants. “Salon owners have jobs waiting,” says the report, but they have been unable to find enough qualified professionals to fill the jobs available. 182,000 of those jobs were filled by newly-trained professionals entering the beauty industry, many from accredited cosmetology schools like Western Beauty Institute.

WBI Gives Brides A Makeover

Prospective brides were given free makeovers at the recent “Wild and Wonderful Weddings” Bridal Show at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds on Sunday, January 13th. Talented students from Western Beauty Institute’s nearby Lancaster campus performed the beauty makeovers, featuring the latest makeup and hairstyle techniques.

“Weddings have become incredibly complicated and potentially stressful,” said the show’s coordinator Tina Hanlon. “Having all the community’s wedding resources under one roof helps planners and participants alike to keep a couple’s special day special.”

The Cost Cutters

According to a recent LA Times article, celebrities and socialites are happily paying $800-950 and up for a hairstyle or haircut these days, an encouragement to beauty school students that there is indeed great money potential to be made in their chosen field.

Even Presidential candidate John Edwards was seen shelling out $400 to keep his hair looking good. “Could I just mess your hair up a little bit?,” David Letterman asked the Senator on a recent stint on “The Late Show.”

WBI Celebrities Get Red Carpet Treatment!

Was that Jennifer Hudson? There goes Selena! Hey, it’s Beyonce!... or at least WBI’s interpretation of those unique and celebrated styles, re-created by the skillful hands of Western Beauty Institute students.

The Celebrity Look-a-Like Contest was held at WBI’s Panorama City campus on December 20th. Students were encouraged to do their very best stylistic imitations of popular stars, using their newly acquired knowledge in the latest techniques in hair styling, nails (manicures & pedicures), cosmetic applications and other beauty techniques.
